Honeynet

A honeypot is a security resource whose value lies in being attacked or compromised. It is a deliberately set-up trap for attackers that looks like a real system or network resource, but is isolated and monitored. The purpose of a honeypot is to collect information about attack methods, techniques and behavior by attracting cybercriminals. This allows security teams to identify vulnerabilities, improve defense strategies and prevent future attacks. Honeypots can take various forms, such as seemingly vulnerable web servers, databases, or even fake network services.

A honeynet extends the concept of a honeypot by representing a network of multiple honeypots. A honeynet serves as a type of surveillance and early warning system that is intentionally exposed to potential attackers to study attack vectors and strategies in a controlled environment. While honeypots represent individual traps, a honeynet provides a complex, interactive environment that can be more attractive to attackers and provide deeper insights into their methods. By analyzing the interactions within a honeynet, security professionals can gain valuable insights that help strengthen the security postures of their real-world networks.
